The Faculty of Medicine at the University of East Sarajevo is one of the more distinctive and practically compelling medical schools available to international students in Europe today. It sits in Foča; a small, clean, university town in the south-east of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the entity of Republika Srpska, on the banks of two rivers: the Drina and the Čehotina. The Faculty was formally established in 1993, with its roots tracing back to 1946 when the original Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo was first founded as the first institution of higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina. When the University of East Sarajevo was constituted in 1992, the Faculty became part of it and was re-established and revitalised in Foča in October 1993. The University of East Sarajevo itself is a public university with 15 faculties and 2 academies spread across ten towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with approximately 13,000 students and 933 academic staff university-wide. The Faculty of Medicine in Foča is the most internationally prominent of its faculties. One of the most meaningful credentials it carries is institutional: it was the first public higher education institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina to receive external accreditation, provided by the Agency for Development of Higher Education and Quality Assurance. That distinction is not a small one. It means that before any other public university in the country had gone through the formal external quality verification process, UES had already done it, and passed. This matters for prospective students because accreditation is the foundation on which degree recognition, international licensing eligibility, and WDOMS listing all rest.

The Faculty building itself covers approximately 6,000 square metres and is purpose-built and well-equipped for the size and scope of the programme. Inside, students have access to two modern amphitheatres, numerous classrooms, a Centre for Biomedical Research; which is the only one of its kind in the region; laboratories for histology, anatomy, pathology, chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology, a clinical skills laboratory for pre-clinical practical training, two computer centres, and a modern medical library. About 240 professors and assistants participate in the teaching process. The majority are directly employed by the Faculty, with approximately 30% drawn from other medical centres in Bosnia and the surrounding region, bringing diverse clinical and research exposure into the classroom.

The teaching hospital is the University Hospital Foča, which was first established in 1896 as the town's general hospital; one of the oldest continuously operating hospitals in the region. In 1993, it was transformed into a clinical centre and became the official teaching base for the Faculty of Medicine. In 2007 it was formally named the University Hospital Foča and designated as a secondary and tertiary healthcare centre. Today it has over 500 beds across five pavilions and is directly adjacent to the Faculty building, creating what genuinely feels like a campus environment on the bank of the Drina River. Students do not travel to reach their clinical training environment; the hospital is right there. The University Hospital provides care across all major disciplines including gynaecology, cardiology, urology, paediatrics, dermatology, neurology, psychiatry, orthopaedics, and has modern operating theatres and intensive care units. As a secondary and tertiary referral centre for the region, it handles a meaningful volume and variety of clinical cases throughout the year.

For international students, the Faculty's most significant structural development has been the launch of the English-medium Medical Studies programme. The General Medicine programme in English started in the academic year 2020/21, and in the years since has built a student community drawn from more than 30 countries worldwide, including India, Egypt, Bangladesh, Nepal, Italy, and Slovenia. The English-medium Dentistry programme followed in 2022/23. These programmes are taught 100% in English, follow the six-year integrated Bologna Process structure, carry 360 ECTS credits, and award the Doctor of Medicine degree upon completion; the same degree awarded to domestic students. The Faculty has participated in over 30 international projects including Tempus, Erasmus+, and WHO projects, and maintains active partnerships across Europe and the world. The active student association regularly organises lectures by guest speakers, exchange opportunities, research participation events, and cultural and social activities.

Tuition fees for the English-medium Medicine programme are approximately €3,500 per year; one of the lowest figures for any English-taught, publicly accredited medical programme in Europe. This is not a compromise on quality; the Faculty has WDOMS listing, NMC recognition, ECFMG eligibility, and the first-accreditation distinction described above. The low fee is a product of the Bosnian public university funding model and the lower cost-base of Foča as a location. Living in Foča is genuinely affordable. The town has around 20,000 inhabitants in its municipality, which means it functions as a true university town rather than a large city; quiet, safe, walkable, and easy to navigate. Accommodation costs are among the lowest of any European student city: a shared apartment runs €100–200 per month, and the university provides its own dormitory options at even lower rates. Monthly living costs including accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses generally sit in the €300–450 range, making the total six-year cost of studying here one of the most competitive you will find anywhere in Europe for a recognised medical degree.

Foča is located 80 kilometres south of Sarajevo, with reasonable road connections to the capital and to Belgrade (approximately 340 kilometres). The town is surrounded by striking natural scenery; the Sutjeska National Park, one of the oldest national parks in the former Yugoslavia, is close by, as is the Tara River Canyon, a popular outdoor destination.
