Q1. Is Medicine at UNITBV taught in English?
+No. The Medicine programme is fully in Romanian. There is no dedicated English-medium track.
Transilvania University of Brasov is called UNITBV. It started in 1990. Today, it is one of Romania's biggest universities. It runs many courses. Engineering. Business. Law. Medicine too.
The Faculty of Medicine offers a 6-year degree. It carries 360 ECTS credits. However, the entire course is taught in Romanian. There is no English track here.
This matters a lot for Indian students. NMC India needs English teaching. Or it needs strong skills in the local language. Plus a foundation year. So, you need one of two things. Either you speak Romanian already. Or you do a year of language first. That adds real time. It also adds real cost. Most blogs skip this fact.
Brasov City and Its History
The city itself is genuinely special. Brasov sits deep in Transylvania. Mountains ring the whole town. It was founded in 1211. The Teutonic Knights built it first. Saxon settlers fortified it later.
So, the old town still feels medieval today. Narrow streets. Gothic spires. The Black Church stands tall here. It is the largest Gothic church in Romania. Moreover, the first Romanian book was printed in this city. The first Romanian school opened here, too. So, Brasov has deep roots in Romanian culture.
Bran Castle sits just 30 km away. Tourists call it Dracula's Castle. But the real story differs. Saxons built it in 1377. Vlad the Impaler likely never lived there. Instead, Queen Marie of Romania made it her home in the 1920s.
Rankings and Clinical Training
In academic terms, UNITBV ranks well overall. QS placed it at 1201-1400 globally in 2025. THE ranks Medicine at 1001+. EduRank puts it 8th in Romania. So, it sits behind Cluj and Timisoara. Still, it remains fully accredited.
Clinical work runs across Brasov's hospitals. But only once students have completed the Romanian course. The full programme covers 5,500 hours. This includes both theory and hospital rotations. Subjects include anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Later years bring real clinical work. Medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and emergency care all feature.
The degrees follows the Bologna Process. So, it works across the whole EU. Graduates can do a residency anywhere in Europe. Tuition ranges from EUR 4,000 to 5,500 per year. However, the language rule changes everything. This college suits Romanian speakers best. Or those ready for a prep year first.
Living costs in Brasov stay low. The city ranks among Romania's safest. Housing costs less here than in Bucharest. Food costs less, too. Still, the language wall is real for Indian students. So, weigh it carefully against English options.

Why Transilvania University of Brasov Needs a Closer Look Before You Choose It
The Language Reality and Ranking Gap
Most pages talk about mountains. Or the old town. But the real issue is not scenery. It is language. So here is what matters most.
First, Romanian rules change your whole plan. Other Romanian schools run English courses. Cluj does. Timisoara does too. UNITBV does not. So, you need fluency already. Or you need a full prep year. That means real extra cost. It also means real extra time.
Second, the ranking gap is worth knowing. UNITBV sits at QS 1201-1400. Cluj and similar schools rank higher in medicine. So UNITBV is a real public university. But it is not the strongest medical pick in Romania. Not for English speakers, at least.
The City Advantage and Final Verdict
Third, Brasov itself is genuinely excellent. It may be Romania's best student city. The old town stays walkable. The Carpathians sit right at its edge. Moreover, it ranks among Romania's safest cities. In fact, Romania's first printed book came from here. So, culture runs deep, even if the academic path needs more prep work.
Also, Bran Castle sits just 30 km away. That gives easy access to a major site. However, its link to Dracula is mostly for marketing purposes. Not real history. Furthermore, Brasov sits between Bucharest and Cluj. So, travelling across Romania stays easy.
Finally, this college suits Romanian speakers well. Or families open to a 1-year language course first. So, think of UNITBV differently. Not as a quick MBBS shortcut. Instead, see it as a longer EU path. One that needs language commitment upfront.
