West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University (WKSMU) is one of Kazakhstan's oldest dedicated medical universities, founded in 1957 in Aktobe β a major industrial and administrative city in western Kazakhstan. Named after Marat Ospanov, a celebrated Kazakh politician who played a significant role in the country's independence, the university has spent nearly seven decades building a reputation for quality medical education in the western region. It has produced approximately 25,000 graduates over its history, many of whom continue to serve in Kazakhstan's national healthcare system.
The MD programme (MBBS equivalent) at WKSMU is delivered in English over six years for international students, following the 5+1 structure of academic training and mandatory internship. The curriculum is structured progressively across all major medical disciplines and supported by a modern library, five educational and laboratory buildings, and five student dormitories accommodating up to 2,100 students. The university maintains three own-accredited clinics: the University Medical Centre, the Family Medicine Clinic, and the Dental Clinic β providing students with direct in-house clinical exposure across a range of specialties.
WKSMU is recognised by the NMC of India, WHO, and ECFMG, and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Its national ranking places it 36th in Kazakhstan and approximately 7,866th globally. Currently, 264 Indian students are studying at WKSMU, forming an active peer support community that assists with adjustment, language support for patient interaction, and structured preparation for NExT and other licensing examinations.
The annual tuition fee of USD 4,200 is among the most competitive for any NMC-recognised Kazakh medical university, with total six-year fees reported at approximately INR 28.26 lakh β genuinely affordable for a government university with its own clinical facilities. WKSMU accepts applications for two academic sessions annually (February and September), providing additional flexibility for students who miss the main September intake.
Aktobe is a mid-sized city in the Aktobe region, known as a business, industrial, and cultural centre of western Kazakhstan. It has a continental climate with cold winters, and while it is less cosmopolitan than Almaty, it offers a safe, manageable student environment with the university's own comprehensive campus infrastructure covering most student needs on-site.
